Since my last blog post, “Compost is not Gross!”- I have added a new habit into my life. And it’s not one I will resolve to rid myself of in 2026.

I do SOCCRA. Do you know about SOCCRA? If not, you should. It’s not a sport. (But I do get a kick out of it).

SOCRRA operates a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Coolidge, north of 14 Mile, that takes your recycling material, sorts it, and bales it for shipment to markets. The MRF can process up to 100 tons per day in an eight-hour shift, or 26,000 tons per year.

For years, I knew about this place, but honestly, it seemed like a hassle. I would place items in the recycling bins at the curb each week, hoping for the best. However, I often heard discouraging stories about how much of it doesn't actually get recycled and ends up in the landfill, making me question the effort.

But when you recycle at SOCCRA, you get the satisfaction of seeing your recycling going into designated bins for processing, and you see a whole operation dedicated to making it work. Brilliant!

• Not recycling

• Getting plastic bags at stores for goods and groceries.

• Buying things online – the worst!

I am an advocate of buying local. But if you must buy online, then be prepared to recycle the packaging. Break down the plastic, EPS (Expanded polystyrene, also known as Styrofoam), and cardboard boxes. I used to feel guilty when I bought something that came packed in Styrofoam – because I knew I would have to throw it out – but SOCCRA recycles Styrofoam! Voila - guilt gone!
